Vacuum sealed storage bags are a charm, as they free up storage space, and they’re convenient if you’re traveling. However, using them for long term storage may bring about permanent wrinkles on clothing. This is what I gathered from the International Fabricare Institute.
Lightweight or sheer fabrics, such as silk chiffon when stored in plastic for a long time can get damaged when the air is removed from the bag. Further, some types of plastic emits a gas that can cause yellowing and bring about discoloration. Prior to purchase of space saver bags, ensure that the label states “safe for all cloth.”
What you can do is to use plastic bins lined with acid free tissue paper or a 100% percent cotton sheet. The sheet should be laundered without bleach or fabric softener. Rinse thoroughly to eliminate all residue. In addition, cloth bags may be your best bet, as they allow garments to breathe.
