I know this for a fact. As soon as I started giving to one charity, I got bombarded with solicitations from dozens of others. That’s because, selling donor’s names has been an important source of revenue for almost all non-profit organizations. They are interested not only on your donations but also on getting your name.
Want to know how to stop the deluge? Some charities, ask you to check on a box on the donation form if you prefer to keep your name off the lists. If it’s not offered by the charity you contribute to, phone them to request that your name be kept confidential. Most charities will comply because they don’t want to risk losing your donation.
Oh, and if you want to check the authenticity of such charitable groups, check out charitynavigator.org and the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance (give.org). You’ll see comprehensive evaluations of hundreds of nonprofit organizations.
