We’re all guilty of multitasking. When we want to accomplish more, we do two or three things at a time. In reality though, multitasking is generally less efficient than focusing on one thing at a time. Do you agree with me? I notice whenever I’m on multitasking mode, that it takes time to warm up to a new task, especially if both require the same skills.
Say for example, writing an e-mail and chatting on the phone. To me, it is impossible to do both well because each tasks requires language skills and short-term memory. Another one is sorting mail and talking to someone. I know I can do this efficiently if I’m just trying to merely separate magazines from envelopes, but if I try to actually read the mail, a conversation becomes difficult because I’m doing two language activities: reading and listening. Another example is making a shopping list while talking to my husband. This does not work, because writing a list is like essentially talking to yourself, which makes it harder to hear someone else.
Are you an efficient multitasker? If so, I’d like to find out how you do it.
