Here in the United States, about 2,500 types of apples are grown. Freshly harvested local variety should be your first choice when buying apples.
Why is apple good? Besides the great flavor, it’s been known that one medium apple with skin contains 80 calories and 4 grams of fiber that are mostly soluble in the form of pectin. This helps lower cholesterol and helps maintain stable sugar levels. Apples also offer vitamins A and C, potassium and even pigments called anthocyanins that mop up cell damaging free radicals. On top of that, apples also contain an antioxidant phytochemical called quercetin that may help fight cancer and heart disease.
That’s the reason why I force to eat apples everyday, even if I don’t adore them as much. One thing’s for sure though, I will never eat apples skinless, as I find the skin the best part. Once I get in to the fleshy part, I tend to stop eating the rest.
