Non Invasive Prostate Cancer Therapy

I was just talking to my husband about his friend’s father who was just recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. He is doing well, as he had opted not to undergo surgery. He’s just been done with several rounds of radiation and so far he has taken it well. In fact, he is going back to his doctor in a couple of weeks for follow-up tests. That’s great, because ever since he was diagnosed, the family has been under a lot of stress.

I wonder if any of the members of his family is aware of HIFU or High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It’s a non invasive form of prostate cancer therapy that destroys tissue with rapid heat elevation. Ultrasound energy, or sound waves, is focused at a specific location and at that “focal point” the temperature raises to 90 degrees Celsius in a matter of seconds which essentially “cook” the tissue. There’s been over 6000 men already that chose to get the HIFU with Sonablate 500 as it is believed to be the most advanced HIFU therapy available.

I told my husband to tell his friend about it, so they can check it out. This however, is not yet approved for use in the United States by the FDA, so if they opt to go for it after they learn more about this treatment, it is right now only available outside the US in countries such as Canada and the Dominican Republic, authorized in Argentina, and available in the Bahamas and Mexico.
