Security is so important. We can make our doors more secure against break-ins by having a few simple measures in place. First and foremost, get a deadbolt lock with a horizontal bolt that is at least 1 inches long. With that, you should also have a reinforced strike plate that is at least 1/8 inch thick. It is to be noted that for the strike plate to be resistant to kicking and hammering, 3-inch screws should be used to mount the strike plate into the door jamb to lodge deeper into the framing. Should you opt to have a door with glass close to the doorknob or with glass sidelights, avail of a double-cylinder deadbolt. A key is needed to open this lock whether you are inside or outside thus, even if the burglar breaks the glass he can’t reach in to open the door. It is important to note however, that you should check with your homeowners insurance carrier if the use of double-cylinder deadbolt is permissible. Some carriers prohibits its use for safety reasons.
