The holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) are almost here and whenever that time of year comes, it is associated with a lot of cooking. Yes, many holiday dishes call for liquor or wine. But if you are not keen on cooking with alcohol, can you substitute alcohol with something else? Absolutely!
For instance, a few tablespoons of liqueur is needed in the recipe, apple cider or orange juice or a tablespoon of vanilla extract and water can be used as substitute. Should you need to deglaze a pan with wine, an equal amount of chicken broth is a good replacement. Adding lemon juice for every half cup of wine called for will brighten the flavor.
This early, getting all your recipes ready and planning ahead on what to buy and have on hand in your pantry ensures smooth preparation. You don’t have to run out and go to the nearby supermarket to pick up that missing ingredient.
Keep in mind though, no matter how good the holiday dishes are, we should not over indulge. Otherwise, we could find ourselves spending more time in the gym on the ellipticals to shed off the extras as a result of over indulgence.
