I was surfing the net for magnets, when I suddenly remembered what my neighbor just told me a couple of days ago. She has started to grow her bulbs indoors. Yes, while in the middle of winter where freezing temperature is the norm, she still plays around in the dirt.
I can’t wait to see her paperwhite narcissus, amaryllis and grape hyacinths. According from her, paperwhites bloom in just two to four weeks and that is just with the help of a little water and pebbles or dirt for the roots to grab on to. The Amaryllis bulb on the other hand, needs potting soil and water once. After the bud stems appear, regular watering is required. And her grape hyacinths? You are not going to believe it but she told me that she chills them after potting (that is 10 to 12 weeks in the fridge), then give it four more weeks to see it bloom.
I wish I have the patience and the green thumb to grow the same. These bulbs are definitely stunning indoors during the middle of the winter. It seem like they are easy to grow. Would you want to try growing them yourself?

My wife plants bulbs next to her azaleas, and every spring they come up and bloom!
It is the most amazing thing to see.

I grow a amaryllis every winter. It takes some patience waiting for the flower to start to grow but no green thumb is required. It adds a spark of color during the gray winter months.

I might be tempted to try growing Amaryllis then. It sounds like it really is that easy.
