Oftentimes, we tend to accumulate common household items thinking that they are still good to keep. But as we all know, nothing lasts forever and that holds true with common household items in the house.
Having said that, do you know when it’s time to part with your smoke alarm? You don’t want to keep an unreliable piece, right? Replacing the batteries every year and testing the alarms every month is a must, but ten years after purchase, they should be replaced. When the alarm flunks any of the monthly tests though, it should be tossed out even if it’s not 10 years old yet.
And how about your fire extinguishers? It is imperative to have them checked annually to ensure that they still work. Generally, fire extinguishers start to lose pressure and become ineffective after 12 years.
That leftover latex paint from the last repainting in your home goes bad after two to three years. It even deteriorates faster if the cans are exposed to freezing temperatures.
Now, this is interesting, as a lot of us may think our mattresses can stay in our bedrooms forever. Know that the dirt, dust and allergens that accumulated within 8 to 10 year old mattress is already impossible to remove by regular cleaning. By then, it’s time to go shopping for replacement.
