Appliance 911: Skip The Repairman

  • For those of you who iron at home, I’m sure that you may have experienced a time when your gunky iron ruined your white shirt. I sure have, and I get frustrated when that happens. Is there a solution to that? That baked-on goo can beĀ  banished by using Faultless Hot Iron Cleaner. This does its magic while the iron is still steamy. All you have to do is apply a dab of the paste to the soleplate of the iron with an old towel. Wipe and iron the clean part of the towel.
  • How about a vacuum cleaner that doesn’t have enough suction? Is it time for a new unit? Maybe not… The bag may only need to be replaced, that is if your vacuum uses a bag. Rule of thumb is – the bag should be replaced whenever it’s three quarters full. If you’re using a bag-less vacuum, the canister should be emptied after two uses and wash or replace filters based on manufacturers direction. If all else fail, it can be that the hose is clogged. You can find out by dropping a coin on one end. If the coin does not come out on the other side, force the debris through the hose with a broomstick.
  • The fridge is not cold even when set at the chilliest setting. What gives? It can be overheated because it’s overworked. This happens when the condenser coils is filled with dust. When this happens, you have to unplug it and remove the grille. With your vacuum’s soft brush attachment or the crevice tool suck up the debris.
