Two days ago, the NYPD launched a 24 hour crackdown on motorists using cell phones while driving. Targeting motorists who illegally text and talk while driving should not only happen when a day of crackdown is scheduled. We all know of the hazard if we talk or text when we’re behind the wheel yet, a lot of people are still doing it. It’s just plain irresponsible.
With a fine of $130 when caught, I wonder if this will deter them. A more hefty fine should be imposed.
Why? Because during previous crackdowns, a significant increase in summonses issued is continuously noted which only means that people probably don’t mind paying the fine. The number has been up significantly since 2008.
Even with the availability of hands-free devices, I still feel that drivers attention is divided if they are talking while driving. Isn’t it that when we are on the road and we’re driving, we should focus and have undivided attention. Personally, I wouldn’t mind if authorities will totally ban in the future the use of cell phones while driving.
