I was hoping I had more time to read up on articles about wine decanters but I’m also interested to find out the whole truth about lead content concern if I continue using lead crystal stemware and decanters whenever we have guests over.
Is it safe for me to continue using them? I found out that while it is indeed true that lead can leach out of crystal into the beverage, it is safe to use crystal stemware and decanter on special occasions. The longer the beverage sits on the decanter or goblet, the more lead will migrate into the drink.
Post dinner party, any leftover wine should be transferred back to the original bottle for storage. The paranoid me, may even prefer to just toss the leftover drink. It is also prudent to NOT serve drinks in leaded stemware to pregnant women and children. For daily use, a set of lead-free stemware should be your best option. There are now lead-free stemware in the market that sparkles like crystal sans the risk.
