This vast square pays tribute to Jean-Andre Massena, the French military leader who is known to be the greatest commander in history. In fact, Napoleon regarded him as the greatest name of his military empire.
Place Massena is Nice, France’s focal point, and it is where old meets new. Nice’s Italian heritage is very evident here. It is here where we had many afternoon strolls, it made us feel like we were in St. Mark’s Square (Venice, Italy) again. The fountain (fonteine du soleil) is a product of Nice’s more recent modernization. It utilizes high pressure after 5:00 p.m.to save power.
The men in the pedestals are modern art additions that they had in place coinciding with the new tram. They are normally illuminated at night.
A miniature version of the famous Galeries Lafayette (department store) in Paris is also located in Place Massena
