We all know what’s going on right now with the price of gold. It’s now at its all time high at $1,847 per ounce. The mighty platinum is now getting eclipsed. The cost of sterling silver too has been increasing in leaps and bounds now at $40.79 per ounce as well as palladium and rhodium. What does that mean to people who love to collect jewelry?
I just renewed my love affair with jewelry collecting since September, and in as much as I favor platinum (my wedding ensemble i.e. band and engagement rings are both set in platinum) in the last ten years or so largely due to the white metal being in vogue, nowadays, that gold prices is picking up, the traditional yellow gold is now seen more often in fashion spreads. Not that it ever became old fashion but white metal has been hugging the fashion world in the last decade. Because of this, many women (me included) totally retired their jewelries set in yellow gold and rose gold, although, I never fully retired my tricolor gold pieces (as seen here -the bangle bracelet in a pic on our trip to French Riviera last year).
Immediately following my wedding, eleven years ago, I only bought jewelries set in white gold and platinum as well as sterling silver to match my wedding ensemble. What prompted me to stop buying jewelries was when I had to re-size a white gold ring, and I discovered that it was more expensive to re-size white gold pieces because of the rhodium plating that it needs in order to restore the white color. Suddenly, buying jewelries didn’t appeal to me until last year’s visit to Ireland at the Weir & Sons Jewellery Store.
I surmise, it’s now time to pull out those pieces from the safety deposit box from the bank. Hello sunshiny yellow and pretty rose!
Even the iconic silver jewelry store on Fifth Avenue is now featuring yellow and rose gold. Unfortunately, it’s really impractical for jewelry collectors to buy gold pieces in view of the current gold price trend.
However, all of the above – I want! Can someone bring me to Tiffany so I can score a piece? —- for FREE (LOL).
