I’m a Board certified Medical Technologist and if I practised my profession, I would have landed one of those Medical & Clinical Laboratory Technician Jobs that are highly in demand right now.
It didn’t happen though, as my only medical exposure was during my twelve months internship in four different hospitals. After I was done with the Med Tech Board and I got my license, I switched gears and found my way into the field that I really liked.
Clearly, the degree was forced on me. My late Mom wanted to have a Doctor in the family. The two daughters who became Nurses was not enough for her. I can’t blame her. Although she was an only child, she came from an extended family of many doctors and nurses. That was perhaps what she wanted to replicate.
I have no regrets. The switch that I took many years ago yielded good results. My Mom in the end was more than proud of what I became and accomplished sans the medical scrub clad daughter that she envisioned. From the all too familiar and ubiquitous medical uniforms, she eventually got used to seeing me in my power suits.
I was the classic case of the all too respectful and indulgent daughter who tried so hard to please Mama who eventually wound up doing what she really loved no matter what.

I think, a mother’s duty is to deliver her children into their real life. Anyway, trying to please our mother is a great deed.
