Traveling is fun, and while we want to bring with us all the conveniences that we enjoy in the comforts of our own home, we all know too well that it’s not always possible.
In these day and age when being wired (smart phones, tablets, laptops) is the name of the game, we can go around thinking that we can surf online to our hearts content and do what we’re used to doing when were in the comforts and safety of our own homes.
Such is not the case when traveling. More often than not, our prime accommodation would be in hotels and since being wired is the name of the game, the hospitality industry have already caught up with it, and the use of their wireless networks are part of common service bundled in the packages that they usually offer.
To many unsuspecting guests, hotels are magnets for cyber crime and that is the reason why we as travelers/guests, should always ensure that data security is of prime importance to the hotel and that security measures are in place to protect users. Apart from that, we should err on the side of caution while on the internet by making sure that the necessary security measures that we have control of are in place. This includes, turning on our computer’s firewall, not doing any transactions such as online banking or the like, make sure that we are really connected to the hotel’s in-house wireless network and not some bogus hotspot or better yet, a private network solution can be perused.
With identity theft on the rise, it always pays to be vigilant and be on top of it for our own peace of mind and that includes having the above measures in place even when traveling. Taking matters into our hands is the best route to take rather than wait for a possible messy credit debacle in the future.
